Thankfulness

Posted on: 11-23-2009 Posted in: Charities, Women Helping Women

Here it is Monday, of Thanksgiving week here in the U.S. Naturally, I want to wish you all a wonderful holiday spent with family and friends – but I want to do more than that – I want to share something personal: one reason for my thankfulness this year.

Last winter, I was motivated to become a sponsor with Women for Women. The founder, Zainnab Salbi, was featured in the book Happy for No Reason, and her story inspired me to take action. Afisa FamilyJust this weekend I received a wonderful letter from the Rwandan woman I’ve been given the opportunity to help, and it even included a photo of her and her children. I’m getting ready to frame it now, to put on my office desk, but before I do, I wanted to share it with you. I know the quality isn’t great, but the warmth I feel when I look at her is phenomenal! I’m so privileged to share in her recovery from the loss of her husband. She has joined a fruit-growing cooperative and is able to better care for her young children.

If you’re moved to explore the opportunities to connect with, and care for, women survivors of war; take a moment to visit the Women for Women site, at http://www.womenforwomen.org. And, let me just remind you of the humorous (yet profound) words of Madeleine Albright: There is a special place in hell for women who do not help other women.

That may sound a bit like a threat, and for that I apologize. Ms. Albright has always been a woman of strong words and strong convictions!

With that said, I bid you a happy Monday.
