I'll be happy to try and answer your questions. Being in NM I had to relocate to Dallas for school. I left my husband in NM and moved to Dallas for a year. I was very blessed in that I did not have to work and go to school at the same time; however there were many of my classmates that did do both. Since I was over 50 when I return to school, it took much more dedication than when I was younger. My entire life was committed to my education. It was a demanding course and I spent my entire life dedicated to school. As for a work day, I usually start about 7:30 and leave 5:30--6:00 unless I have an evening service. I'm fortunate enough to be with a large enough firm that we are not on 24 hour call. We have part-time staff that takes our night calls and other part-time staff that goes on evening transfers. I do work two Saturdays and one Sunday per month. That's just how our rotation is set up. I will say that in smaller firms many times the funeral director will take the first call, embalm, and then meet with the family the following morning. Yes, there are many funernal directors that balance family and their career, but since there are no children in our home, that is not something I'm faced with.

This is a wonderful career for me, but yes it can be very demanding----death does not respect the fact that you may have outside plans. If you're willing to adjust when necessary and learn the art of leaving the funeral home at the funeral home when you leave, the it's doable. Also, one must learn how to be "present" when dealing with a grieving family, but NOT take their grief on as your own.

Lora, I've tried to be very straight forward and honest. It's a wonderful profession if that's where your heart is, but it can be a nightmare if you're just looking for a job. The rewards are great, but so can the demands be unfair at times.

Please feel free to call me anytime. I'm at (505) 843-6333 in New Mexico which is MST.

Hello Ms. Colley Blevins

My name is Lora. I have been inspired by your story. Would you mind if I asked a few more questions about your journey into what has become your purpose and ministry. Can you tell me more about the struggles and requirements for school. I'm sure each state will vary. I live in NNew York. Would you recommend this field and ministry to a mother who has a young child. CCan you give an example of a work day. Are you on 24 hours call? I look forward to hearing from you . I am a single working mom and I have wanted to embrace this field and touch lives but have never done anything about it. I am worried how to balance the family life with the life of being a funeral director. Thank you for any advice you can give. loro1011@aol.com

You know, as a Buddhist, I know that a difficult death, where suffering is the central experience, is said to clear negative karma. That clearing makes it possible for the person to reincarnate at a higher level of enlightenment - which is a good thing. Yet, the thought of my friend suffering as he did still breaks my heart, leading me into suffering. "Om Mani Padme Hum..."

The book really made me laugh in so many spots - and yet also made me cry in other spots. It was a nicely balanced look at funeral service in the U.S. today - it's one of those I wish I had written!

I just recommended the same book on Twitter today!! I'm posting now to second that suggestion. It's a great read - and one that influenced my decision to launch Shine On Brightly!
