Comments on the Japanese film, “Departures”

February 28, 2010

DeparturesI can’t express in words (even though I’m a writer) the full beauty of this film. It’s the most compelling, beautiful, heart-driven essay on the spiritual and social implications of choosing funeral service as a …

AWFDConnections Podcasts

February 26, 2010

We’re starting our new podcasting platform a bit later than expected due to…you guessed it, technical difficulties. We’re all familiar with those. Suffice it to say, our first podcast will be available to members, early next week. I’ve got the recording, just need to tweak and polish it.

My Friday Night Film Selection

February 26, 2010

Here’s to a wonderful Friday evening. Tonight, I’m going to watch DEPARTURES, a Japanese film I discovered in a preview on another disc. Here’s the synopsis provided by Netflix: Freshly unemployed, young cellist Daigo (Masahiro Motoki) has an epiphany in which he realizes he’s been heading down the wrong career path. Retreating to his hometown, he trains for a new professional role as a nakanshi, or one who prepares the dead for burial. Tsutomu Yamazaki provides comic relief as Daigo’s eccentric mentor in director Yojiro Takita‘s Oscar-winning, richly detailed — if unlikely — drama about finding your bliss. I think it will be great fun…and

Friday Night Movies

February 20, 2010

I thought I’d share with you a wonderful movie I saw last night. Eulogy is downright funny at moments, always witty, and profiles a delightfully wacky (and rather dysfunctional) family as they come together after the death of their father. I highly recommend this to all who work in, or

Our AWFD Logo Pins Have Arrived!

February 16, 2010

I was surprised when the UPS guy knocked on my door yesterday afternoon. With the banks and post offices closed for President’s Day, I just assumed that no delivery service would be available – from any carrier. I was delighted when the pins arrived  on schedule, and even more delighted when I opened the package to see them up close. I’m really very pleased with their quality. All dues-paying members will receive a pin as part of their membership. I made note in February’s newsletter that you should each contact me with your preference of “gold tone” or “silver tone” – and some of you responded right away. If I don’t hear from you by the end of the business week, I’ll send you one anyway – honestly, the touches of silver or gold are minute, and really not an overwhelming factor in their beauty. Ready to see them? Check them out! IMG_0176R For those of you who haven’t ‘officially’ joined, I suggest that this is the
