10,000 hours…am I kidding? Nope!
August 25, 2009
Malcolm Gladwell, in his newish book, Outliers, shares his discoveries about what really contributes to exceptional accomplishment in your professional or personal life.
Gladwell’s research discovered a remarkable thing – most folks reach a level of mastery after 10,000 hours of practice.
H. Jackson Brown said, “Don’t say you don’t have enough time. You have exactly the same number of hours per day that were given to Helen Keller, Pasteur, Michelangelo, Mother Teresa, Leonardo da Vinci, Thomas Jefferson, and Albert Einstein.”
In fact, Michelangelo said “if people knew how hard I worked to get my mastery, it wouldn’t seem so wonderful at all.”
So, 10,000 hours. Are you up for it?
I know I better be!
As the growth of AWFD continues to climb, albeit slowly, I realize now that 10,000 hours might just be the magic number. 10,000 spent in member benefits development, advertising, writing, promoting, and reaching out to the wonderful women of funeral service.
And for each of you, as you face the challenges of marketing your services and products, it’s a comfort to realize that mastery will come…in time. And, as we put in those hours, we’re essentially learning to be flexible, creative, and forward-thinking. Sweet!
